Q and I went to Lonsdale with her uncle to take in some of the view and grab some fresh oysters. Unfortunately, it was probably the only rainy day of the entire summer so far (Q: We went on Aug 1st, that’s why!)! Needless to say, we decided to stay indoors and just hangout around the market.
We’ve heard good things about Screaming Mimi’s so we were excited to grab some fresh seafood from them |(Q: actually, my uncle was here 10 yrs ago and between him, my aunt and my mom, they ate 5 dozens of oysters! He wanted to go back ever since).
They’re a pretty big stall at the Lonsdale Quay Market. I’ve been here a few times before, and I don’t know how I’ve missed them before!
The menu is pretty simple, and the price seems pretty decent. Plenty of choices!
I really like being able to pick the oysters ourselves. The day we went, they had three types of oysters for us to choose from: Kushi, Beausoleil, and Effingham.
We picked 1.5 dozen (or rather Q’s uncle picked) randomly from all three pots! (Q: actually I hated having to touch the oysters myself! YUCK!)
It might have been because it was a rainy and slightly quieter day, but the oysters were lacking something. They didn’t seem to be fresh from the ocean, the flavours were a little blander than expected. I was anticipating the Kushi ones especially to be nice and sweet, but they were pretty flat as well. (Q: the oysters were rather “skinny”. But we are eating oysters in the month without any Rs in it!)We also got 1lb of steamed mussels and clams. The mussels and clams weren’t amazing, they lacked freshness and the mussels weren’t very meaty. A little disappointing like the oysters. (Q: I thought the clams were not bad…although they were also on the smaller side for the clams…)
We may have picked an off day for Screaming Mimi’s so we’ll give them another shot the next time we’re in Lonsdale. Hopefully the weather will be better and the seafood will taste fresher!
