Another food cart review! I’ve almost tried out every cart belonging to the QE Pod – I’m just missing Dougie Dogs!
I really like ChouChou’s food cart – it has a vintage feel to it that really catches one’s eye when you walk by it.
ChouChou serves both dessert crepes and savoury crepes. They’re a little bit on the pricey side! I had a short chat with the owner, and she mentioned that the way she does her crepes are authentic French. That means that the crepes are thing and petite, not a monstrosity like ones from Cafe Crepe.
I wasn’t sure what to get so I asked the owner to pick a dessert crepe for me. She recommended the classic ChouChou, which is a salty caramel with Grand Marnier liquor crepe – that sounded pretty delicious to me!
The crepe itself was very good. Very thin and had a nice flavour to it. The caramel and Grand Marnier was an excellent match! It tasted like a caramelly-rum sauce, so there was an initial sweet and malty flavour that blends well with the Grand Marnier.
The only thing that really disappointed me was how it was served – eating it in a wax bag upright resulted in all the sauce dripping down to the bottom. The result was a very soggy second half of the crepe that was both messy and not as delicious as the top half.
I think her crepes make a nice treat, but I’m a bit on edge about returning when considering the price point. When comparing to something like Cafe Crepe though, I think ChouChou definitely has the edge in creativity and authentic flavour!
